Description

Gem Proof-Only 1858 Seated Dollar

1858 $1 PR65 Cameo NGC. This brilliant Gem possesses icy devices that exhibit obvious contrast with the unperturbed and glassy fields. The 1858 is the final proof date without a recorded mintage, and is from the first year that proofs were made available to collectors (earlier-dated proofs are principally restrikes, coined at a later time). More importantly, it is a proof-only date, the only such date in the series. Breen (1988) estimated that the proof 1858 has a mintage of 80 pieces, but Duncan Lee (2006) states it is 300+ pieces. Census: 2 in 65 Cameo, 1 finer (7/08).
