Description

1858 Seated Dollar, Brilliant PR65
Original Proof, Full Strike

1858 $1 PR65 NGC. OC-P1, Low R.4. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. As a proof-only issue, the 1858 Seated dollar is on many wantlists even though its estimated mintage is only 275 original proofs and 35 restrike proofs. Two die pairs are known, with this OC-P1 variety accounting for most of the originals. An unfinished area beneath Liberty's chin is at least 60% -- the best indicator of the early die state accounting for the original proofs. Some coins have that unfinished area greatly reduced by die polishing and those pieces may account for some restrikes. This coin is a flashy Gem proof with mirrored fields and well-frosted motifs. The strike is pinpoint sharp on both the obverse and the reverse. of the eagle's wing tops are fully struck -- not always the case on this date. The coin is entirely brilliant with only a faint hint of reddish-gold and blue toning at the reverse rim and overwhelming silver luster glitters from all angles for outstanding eye appeal. There are no consequential marks or hairlines to distract the eye. NGC Census: 4 in 65, 4 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N7079)
