Description

1859 Seated Dollar, PR65
Razor Sharp Strike and Colorful Toning

1859 $1 PR65 PCGS. CAC. OC-P1, High R.3. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a, as always. Pale yellow dominates on the lower and right of the obverse, where sage and rose are most prevalent at the center and left. On the reverse, the split is between right and left - yellow on the right, sage on the left, and rose serving as a referee between them. Strike is razor sharp, especially on the reverse, where all of the eagle's tail feathers are extremely well-defined. The only notable pedigree markers on this abrasion-free Gem are small spots above the 8 in the date and the eagle's head.

In 1859, proof Seated dollars entered the era of larger, documented mintages. The mintage multiplied to 800 coins, with about half surviving today. This is almost equivalent to the entire surviving population of proofs from 1840 through 1857. Still, almost the entire mintage was achieved with one pair of dies. A sole example is believed to have been produced from Reverse 1856 PA, but it has yet to be confirmed.
