Initial Reverse Die Use

1859 $1 PR66 NGC. CAC. OC-P1, R.3. Die lumps in the eagle's wing below the U in UNITED identify this proof die as the same one used later to strike 1851, 1852, 1854, and 1858 proof restrikes. While Mint records indicate a proof mintage of 800 pieces, current numismatic scholarship suggests that only about 400 to 450 examples were actually distributed to collectors who preferred proofs over Mint State coins. This Premium Gem is extraordinary, featuring fully mirrored fields that shine through gorgeous gold, rose and blue toning on both sides. Census: 19 in 66 (1 in 66+, 1 in 66 ), 3 finer.
