Description

    1860 Silver Dollar, PR65 Cameo
    Questionable Mintage Figure

1860 $1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. The Guide Book reports a mintage of 1,330 proof silver dollars in 1860, a figure that seems questionable. Only two other issues (1861 and 1870) had proof mintages of 1,000 coins, and even those production quantities seem extraordinary, given the number of survivors. PCGS has certified 198 proof 1860 silver dollars, compared to 213 proofs of 1863 with a mintage of only 460 coins. The actual mintage of the 1860 was probably in the range of about 500 proofs.

One of those proofs is the Gem Cameo specimen offered in this lot, with extraordinary intermingled iridescence on the obverse and champagne toning with peripheral blue on the reverse. This is a spectacular specimen. Population: 8 in 65 Cameo, 4 finer (6/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 252E, PCGS# 87003)

    Weight: 26.73 grams
