Description

    1861 Seated Dollar, Toned PR63
Much Scarcer Than the Official Mintage

1861 $1 PR63 PCGS. As in 1858 and 1859, proofs were struck in a quantity far in excess of the number actual needed by collectors at the time. The official mintage in this year was 1,000 pieces, but it is generally believed that no more than 350 coins were actually sold (the remainder were melted at year's end). The fields are remarkably deep on this coin. We say remarkably deep because the depth of toning is considerable on each side. Several layers of color are present, but the obverse primarily presents a reddish patina while the reverse is deep blue. A nice proof striking for the grade.
