Remarkable 1861 Dollar, PR64
1861 $1 PR64 PCGS. This date represents the first Civil War issue that was extensively hoarded, reducing mintages in future years to the point that silver coinage nearly became obsolete. Silver and gold coins did not circulate, and eventually even copper and nickel was hoarded by a concerned public. Proof coins were only available at a premium, and were only acquired by the most serious collectors. This piece is a remarkable near-Gem with full details and excellent contrast on the obverse, all beneath faint champagne toning.
