Description

    1861 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR65
    Elusive Date in High Grade

1861 $1 PR65 NGC. The growing popularity of coin collecting resulted in a feeling of optimism at the Philadelphia Mint in 1861 where a generous mintage of 1,000 silver and minor proof sets was struck on April 15. Unfortunately, the Civil War began with the firing of rebel forces on Fort Sumter on April 12 and the resulting financial stresses and uncertainties dampened enthusiasm for proof sets. Probably no more than 350 sets were actually distributed, with the remainder melted early in 1862. The 1861 proof Seated Liberty dollar is the most difficult date of the early 1860s to locate today, despite smaller mintages in other years.

The present coin is a spectacular Gem, with sharply detailed design elements throughout. Vivid shades of gray, cerulean-blue, and lime-green toning mingle on the reflective well-preserved surfaces. No mentionable surface flaws are evident. Census: 9 in 65 (1 in 65+, 1 in 65+ ), 10 finer (10/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 252F, PCGS# 7004)

    Weight: 26.73 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
