1863 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR64
Rare Deep Cameo Example

1863 $1 PR64 Deep Cameo PCGS. OC-P1, High R.4. The economic stresses and uncertainties of the Civil War resulted in widespread hoarding of all precious metal coinage, and the government suspended specie payments in late 1861. Ordering proof sets became much more expensive during this era, since they had to be paid for in kind, which entailed purchasing precious metal coinage from bullion brokers or banks at significant premiums, or paying in paper money which was exorbitantly discounted. As a result, only 460 proof Seated Liberty dollars were struck in 1863, to accompany a small business-strike emission of 27,660 pieces. Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing estimate no more than 210 proof examples are extant in all grades today. One obverse and two reverse dies were employed to strike the small proof mintage, creating two die varieties for the date. This coin represents the slightly scarcer OC-P1 variety, with the lowest horizontal shield line extending through the edge of the shield on the left.

The present coin is an attractive Choice example, with sharply detailed, frosty design elements that contrast profoundly with the deeply mirrored fields to create an intense cameo effect. The surfaces are well-preserved, with a few subtle hints of pale gold toning. Examples with the Deep Cameo designation are rare. Population: 3 in 64 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (8/18).
