Description

1863 Seated Dollar, PR65 Cameo
Rare This Fine, Near-Brilliant

1863 $1 PR65 Cameo NGC. The bulk of surviving proof 1863 Seated dollars have little meaningful contrast and typically grade no finer than PR64. Gems are rare and Cameo examples are scarce; this near-brilliant representative combines these two elusive categories, making for a true condition rarity. The technical quality is excellent, including needle-sharp design elements and deeply mirrored fields. A few stray hairlines appear to be all that prevent an even finer grade.

This proof issue had a limited mintage of just 460 pieces, the lowest recorded proof mintage in the series after 1858. Widespread hoarding of silver coin during the Civil War period likely aided in this issue's survival, which seems more plentiful in the absolute sense than it theoretically should be. Nonetheless, we suspect the certified population reports reflect some resubmissions, particularly in the upper range where the difference in value between succeeding grades widens. Census: 5 in 65 Cameo, 3 finer (8/15).(Registry values: N7079)
