Description

1863 Seated Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Few Cameos Known This Fine

1863 $1 PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. OC-P2, R.4. The 1863 is distinguished as the lowest-mintage proof Seated dollar struck after the proof-only issue of 1858. Only 460 pieces were produced, and series specialists Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing estimate that fewer than half survive today in all grades, despite inflated certified population figures. Most known examples grade no finer than PR64 and have little or no cameo contrast. Premium Gems -- especially Cameos -- are genuinely rare. Only three Deep Cameos are reported, all at PCGS and in PR64.

This Premium Gem is one of the finest Cameos we have seen. We offered the PR68 Cameo NGC coin on numerous occasions (likely the same as the PR68 Cameo NGC coin), and the PR67 Cameo NGC coin twice, but neither since 2011. The toning on this original example shows blue and violet obverse borders with a warm golden center, while the reverse displays lavender and champagne accents throughout mainly aquamarine patina. The strike is sharp, and cameo contrast is especially apparent on the obverse. Population: 3 in 66 (1 in 66+) Cameo, 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 1 finer (1/18).
