Description

    1864 Seated Dollar, PR65
    Richly Toned and Fully Struck

1864 $1 PR65 NGC. The combined populations of NGC and PCGS show that, possible duplications notwithstanding, the number of Gem survivors of the 1864 proof Seated dollar is perhaps only one-third that of those at the near-Gem level, and the prices correspond in inverse proportion. This Gem proof is one of 14 such submissions at NGC, versus 50 in PR64, and there are 13 grading events finer, also including likely duplicates (2/13).

But far beyond any mere consideration of numerical grade, this is a coin that possesses immense eye appeal. The Seated figure of Liberty shows prevailing golden hues that deepen in the obverse field to sunset-orange with an accent of sky-blue, and the reverse shows even deeper amber and copper shades, all complementing the rich mint luster that emanates from beneath the toning. The strike is full throughout both sides, and the only mentionable contact marks are a couple of small scrapes above the eagle's head, in concert with the grade. An extremely nice example of this Civil War proof mintage of 470 coins.

    Learn about consigning with us

What I most appreciated was how thorough you were when we initially met, how you were conservative in your estimates, not trying to get me to consign by giving false expectations, and then for delivering above and beyond on your commitment to me of a wonderful marketing campaign and a first rate catalog and photos, all of which resulted in a final total price realized that was nicely higher than what you had told me to expect.
