Description
1865 Seated Dollar, PR65
Stunning Ultra Cameo Rarity
1865 $1 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. OC-P2. R.3. Osburn-Cushing Die
State a/a, as always for this die pair. This die pair uses the
reverse die that was later used for the 1851 and 1852 proof
restrikes. It is the final use of the 1865 P1 obverse die. Minute
die doubling is apparent on each side, earning OC-P2 a place in
Osburn-Cushing's Top 30 varieties for the series. As a date, the 1865 proof Seated dollar is a tremendous rarity in Ultra Cameo grades. NGC reports only 18 such coins, with PCGS adding another 17. These figures likely include some duplications. Since our Permanent Auction Archives began in 1993, we have handled only 19 proof 1865 dollars in the Ultra or Deep Cameo classifications.
The current Gem Ultra Cameo displays liquidlike mirrors and luminous, frosty motifs with stunning eye appeal from every angle. The faintest amber toning in the margins leaves the interiors brilliant. A small mark left of the 1 in the date serves as a pedigree marker, while the rest of the coin is largely untouched. Census: 6 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 7 finer (11/24).(Registry values: N4719)
