1865 Silver Dollar Gem Proof
Pure-White, Contrasted Ultra Cameo

1865 $1 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. It seems likely the proof dollars in 1865 were all distributed in proof sets, with 500 of the sets were assembled by the Mint. Most survivors of the mintage are toned to one extent or another, especially if they were stored with their companion pieces in the original packaging. This example, however, is blazing pure-white, without even a hint of tone on the rims or anywhere else on the coin. All devices -- including the rims -- are fully struck, heavily frosted, and white. Watery-deep mirrors contrast boldly with the motifs. While nearly the entire proof mintage exists today, the rarity of business strikes for the date put added pressure on the availability as collectors seek to fill the missing date in their set with a proof. Census: 2 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 7 finer (3/14).(Registry values: N4719)
