Description
Dramatic 1865 Seated Dollar, PR66 Ultra Cameo
1865 $1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. On April 2, 1865, the government of the Confederacy evacuated Richmond after Petersburg fell to Union forces. President Abraham Lincoln visited fire-ravaged Richmond just two days later, and stopped at Jefferson Davis' abandoned residence. Less than a week after, Lee surrendered to Grant near the Appomattox Court House. In that same year, the Philadelphia Mint produced 500 proof silver dollars, the final year of the Seated Liberty, No Motto type. This coin is a fitting tribute to a year of significant endings. NGC has graded only seven 1865 PR66 Ultra Cameo examples, with none finer from either service (7/09). The fields are exceptionally clean and contrast dramatically with the fully struck devices. Bright silver, like-new surfaces dominate, with just a whisper of gold toning.(Registry values: N7079)
