1865 Seated Dollar, PR66 ★ Ultra Cameo
No Ultra/Deep Cameos Graded Finer

1865 $1 PR66 ★ Ultra Cameo NGC. The final year of No Motto Seated dollar production, 1865 was also the final year of the Civil War, and 1865 Seated dollars are desired on both counts. Many of the 46,500 business strikes produced this year were exported and subsequently melted, a fact that increases the importance of proof offerings. Only 500 proof examples were struck during the year, and in so high a grade any Seated dollar is a significant rarity -- much more so, the low-mintage 1865 issue.

The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show several hundred submissions for the 1865 proof Seated dollar, no doubt both services including the inevitable resubmissions that seem to increase every year due to "crackouts." Most of those submissions average between PR64 and PR65. The present example is the sole PR66 Ultra Cameo specimen at NGC, and there are no Ultra/Deep Cameo pieces graded finer at either service. This piece is tied with a single PR66 Deep Cameo specimen at PCGS. NGC has seen five submissions in PR67 and one in PR68, with no Cameo notations.

This black-and-white Premium Gem has a lovely appearance that has earned it NGC's coveted Star designation, denoting exceptional eye appeal. Both sides are free of mentionable hairlines, and the deeply reflective fields sparkle at all angles with a completely brilliant appearance. The strike is sharp, as expected for the grade, with ultimate field-device contrast. If the foregoing were not enough, this coin has been preserved in what must be considered a miraculous state of preservation. Census: 1 in PR66 Ultra Cameo; no Ultra/Deep Cameo pieces finer (6/13).
