Description

1866 With Motto Dollar, PR61 Cameo
First Year of the New, Modified Design

1866 $1 Motto PR61 Cameo NGC. The 1866 Seated dollar enjoys a strong and consistent demand from type collectors as the first year the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse, creating a distinct design difference. It appears that the design alteration was little noted by collectors of the day as there is an imperceptible difference in the number of survivors of the 1866 compared to later years. This proof displays extraordinarily deep mirrors. Set against this mirrored reflectivity is a considerable amount of mint frost over the devices. The combination produces a stark cameo contrast. This Cameo dollar basically presents as brilliant, but a closer look reveals a faint blush of reddish patina. Only slight contact marks can be found in the fields.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
