1866 Seated Dollar, PR64
First-Year With Motto Coin
1866 $1 Motto PR64 NGC. CAC. This attractive near-Gem proof
Seated dollar shows centers on each side with warm golden-amber
tones surrounded by shades of violet, blue, and olive-green.
Flashes of brilliance appear in the fields, deeply mirrored and
contrasting moderately against razor-sharp devices. Marks are
minimal, and the CAC endorsement is well-deserved.Population Data (9/15): NGC reports 62 submitted in PR64 and 24 finer. PCGS records 61 Choice proofs and nine finer.
Heritage Commentary: The motto IN GOD WE TRUST first graced the two cent coins of 1864. Two years later it was adopted on quarters, half dollars, and dollars (plus the five, ten, and twenty dollar gold coins), making this a first-year issue of sorts. (Only two 1866 No Motto proofs are known.) A total of 725 proof With Mott Seated dollars complemented a production of 48,900 circulation strikes in 1866. Near-Gems are very scarce, and finer proofs are decidedly rare.
