Description
1866 Motto Seated Dollar, PR66
Ex: Eliasberg, Outstanding Eye Appeal
1866 $1 Motto PR66 NGC. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. A razor-sharp
proof example of the first-year Motto design with deep
silver-mirrored surfaces and a random scattering of mauve, blue,
and gold toning offsetting frost-white central devices.
Inexplicably, a single die pair was used to produce all business
strikes (48,900 coins) while three die pairs were required to mint
725 proofs. All 1866 proofs are of the Motto variety except for the
two famous and historic, ultra-rare No Motto proofs.NGC reports just six Premium Gem proofs and two finer examples, while PCGS lists but a single PR66 coin (3/16). By and large the proofs were carefully made, with several Cameo and Ultra Cameo proofs certified but not included in the above counts. This glittering proof with the Eliasberg pedigree offers exceptional quality for the grade and provenance.
Ex: E.S. Norris Collection (Chapman Brothers, 5/1894); J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. (1942); Eliasberg Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 2237.(Registry values: N7079)
