Description

1866 Seated Dollar, PR66
First Motto Issue, Partial Contrast

1866 $1 Motto PR66 NGC. OC-P1, Low R.4. With the exception of two specimens, all 1866 Seated dollar proofs are of the With Motto type. This PR66 coin, despite not being awarded a Cameo designation, shows significant contrast on the obverse. Light gray-gold patina deepens slightly on the reverse, where it joins with daubs of blue and violet-pink near the right border. Delicate frost covers strongly detailed devices. The eye appeal is lovely. Census: 6 in 66 (1 in 66 ), 2 finer (7/18).
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2013), lot 4347; Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2013), lot 5727, where it realized $18,800.(Registry values: N7079)
