Description

1866 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR66
First Year With Motto

1866 $1 Motto PR66 NGC. OC-P2. Only 725 proof Seated Liberty dollars were struck in 1866, the first year of the Motto design. Two proofs are known with the No Motto reverse, but most numismatists believe they were struck as numismatic delicacies at a later date. Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing have identified two proof die varieties for the 1866 With Motto production. This coin represents the OC-P2 variety, with the date placed further to the right and a die line under GOD in the motto. The obverse was also used on the extremely rare No Motto variety of this date, while the hardy reverse was used to strike at least one proof variety of each year from 1866 to 1870.

The present coin is a delightful Premium Gem, with sharply detailed design elements and deeply reflective fields, under vivid shades of greenish-gold and cerulean-blue toning. The well-preserved surfaces are free of mentionable distractions and overall eye appeal is tremendous. Census: 6 in 66 (1 in 66 ), 2 finer (4/16).
