Description
Fabulous Premium Gem Proof
1866 Motto Seated Dollar
1866 $1 Motto PR66 NGC. The upsurge of religious sentiment
that occurred during the dreadful War Between the States saw the
placement of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on many U.S. coin designs.
The first U.S. regular issue coin to bear the motto was the two
cent piece that debuted in 1864, but by 1866 a panoply of issues
bore those words, as the Mint rushed new dies into production.
Several denominations for the year are known both with and without
the motto. The 1866 Motto Seated dollar is elusive in high grades, with a recorded production of only 725 pieces. NGC has certified only four pieces in PR66 with two finer, and PCGS has graded two PR66 coins with none finer (2/09).
Even if the surfaces of this piece were not as close to technical perfection as they are, the toning would bring a significant premium. The interior of each side is fiery red and surrounded by deep blue at the margins. The fields are brightly reflective and flash forcefully through the toning. This nice, high-grade example would fit perfectly in a first-year type set.(Registry values: N7079)
