Description

1866 Motto Seated Dollar, PR66
Fully Struck Transitional-Year Type

1866 $1 Motto PR66 NGC. The 1866 With Motto Seated dollars represent the upswell of national religious sentiment that occurred during and after the Civil War. The new two cent denomination, introduced in 1864, was the first regular issue to bear the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, but its extension to existing coin series was a logical follow-on. Only 725 proofs were made of the Motto dollar of 1866 to complement the small circulation-strike mintage of 48,900 pieces.

The present Premium Gem proof boasts aesthetic appeal that is every bit as nice as its technical grade. There is no Cameo designation, but perceptible field-device contrast is evident. The upper reaches of each side feature gold on the obverse, jade on the reverse, that transition to deeper sky-blue on the lower portions, and the frosted, predominantly silver-gray devices contrast well with the reflective fields. A couple of tiny lintmarks on the reverse are as made. This piece boasts a full strike as a further attraction on this transitional-year type. Census: 5 in 66, 2 finer (2/13).
