Description

1867 Seated Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Conditionally Rare, Dramatic Contrast

1867 $1 PR66 Cameo NGC. OC-P1, Low R.3. The proof 1867 Seated dollar had a mintage of 625 pieces, although it is unknown if the entirety of that production was actually distributed as the coins were issued in five deliveries from February through June. The proof dies are different than the dies used for regular coinage. This proof reverse was previously used for proof silver dollar coinage in 1866, and it would continue to be used for coinage through 1870. A diagonal die line through GOD is a ready identifier. As a Premium Gem Cameo, this remarkably contrasted and deeply mirrored piece is quite rare. NGC reports only five numerically finer Cameo examples, and there are no finer in Cameo at PCGS (9/25). The strike is full throughout, and the fields are devoid of distractions. Neither side exhibits mentionable toning. A shallow planchet void (as struck) appears at the rim left of the date.
