Description

1868 Dollar, PR64
Starkly Contrasted, All-Brilliant

1868 $1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. OC-P2, High R.3. The obverse is the second one used to strike proofs in 1868, identified by the tripled 1 and repunched 8s in the date. The reverse was employed from 1866 through 1870. An estimated 300 OC-P2 examples survive compared to 150 OC-P1 specimens, for a total of 450 1868 proof dollars extant. A thick coating of frost over the devices generates stark contrast against the reflective fields, although this piece is undesignated as a Cameo. Brilliant with mint-made die polish lines in the fields and a trace of softness on the eagle's left (facing) leg.
