1868 Seated Dollar, PR67 ★ Ultra Cameo

1868 $1 PR67 ★ Ultra Cameo NGC. According to the Breen
Proof Encyclopedia, two different obverse dies were paired
with the same reverse,a reuse from the 1867 proof Seated dollars,
to strike the 1868 proofs. Breen describes this reverse as "spine
joins arrowhead and inner angle of L." The present lot is a
remarkable untoned silver-white 1868 Seated dollar certified PR67
★ Ultra Cameo by NGC. While we can see on the reverse of
this 1868 a tiny tine of metal connecting the midshaft of arrow 2
with the head of arrow 3 (below) with a small unpolished area of
the die forward of that, we see no evidence of anything connecting
to the L of DOL. below. The obverse shows minute yet perceptible
repunching of the date, most clearly on the base of the 1, the flat
base of the lower flag, and the inside-lower loop of the last 8.
The date tilts slightly downward from left to right and is entered
rather high in the field. Breen notes that the double-punching
"fades," presumable with die usage -- which leads us to the second
point: This piece is clearly a quite-early strike, possibly one of
the first, possibly the very first, to fall from the dies for the
year, as the contrast between fields and devices is nothing short
of spectacular.As a previous Heritage cataloger wrote concerning this piece in its previous appearance with us, "... in all honesty we have never seen a coin with this degree of contrast. It most closely resembles the Ultra Cameo coins that the Mint produces today." This piece is tied for the finest graded with a PCGS Deep Cameo that we handled in 2006, a coin that brought $92,000 in our Denver Platinum Night (Heritage, 8/2006), lot 5329. The ice-white surfaces are completely untoned, with pristine reflective fields and uniform, thick mint frost on all devices. There are simply no mentionable impairments on this stunning coin.
