Description
1871 Seated Dollar, PR67 Deep Cameo
The Sole Finest Certified at PCGS
1871 $1 PR67 Deep Cameo PCGS. OC-P1, R.2. Ex: Simpson.
Osburn-Cushing Die State a/a. OC-P1 is by far the more plentiful of
the two documented proof die pairs. The date is positioned
noticeably further left than on OC-P2. The reverse die is the same
as on OC-P2. As a date, the 1871 proof is moderately plentiful in
low and middle grades with little or no cameo contrast. However,
Cameo examples are scarce, and Deep Cameos are inherently rare.
Just 11 such coins are reported at PCGS, of which the Simpson
Superb Gem is the sole finest. PCGS lists one other PR67 example, a
non-Cameo (11/21).In their May 1889 sale, the Chapman brothers note that some proof (and presumably business strike) silver dollars of this date were struck from silver that came out of the horns of fire engines from Diligent Fire Engine Company No. 10 of Philadelphia. Although difficult to prove, it is an intriguing contemporary viewpoint from the numismatic community just a few years after the production of this issue. Diligent was founded July 4, 1791, and dissolved March 15, 1871, after which Philadelphia's paid firefighting department was established.
The Simpson 1871 proof Seated dollar is the sole finest example certified at PCGS. Beautifully mirrored fields complement thick mint frost across the devices, and the strike is sharp throughout. Champagne interiors cede to ribbons of multicolor toning that run throughout the peripheries, including a distinctive crescent along the upper obverse border. Eye appeal is outstanding, and the technical quality is superb. Population: 1 in 67 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (11/21).(Registry values: N10218)
