1871 Seated Dollar, PR67
Top-Notch Example, Tied for Finest Graded

1871 $1 PR67 NGC. The Seated Liberty proof dollar issue of 1871 was struck in the recorded amount of 960 pieces, but most of the surviving proofs today are found at the Select level, or near-Gem at best. In the Superb Gem proof grade of the present piece, this coin is tied with only two other submissions at NGC, and none are finer (2/13). PCGS has seen but a single example in PR67, with the runner-up a PR65+ coin.

The 1871 Seated dollars struck for circulation were among the largest mintages of the entire series along with the 1872, each made to the extent of about 1.1 million coins per year. Similarly, the proof mintages of 1871 and 1872 -- the latter, some 950 pieces -- are among the largest in the series, although the 1870 was the absolute largest, at 1,000 proofs.

However, the mintage of proof silver dollars did not stop at the standard Liberty Seated design in 1871. Not only were numerous pattern silver dollars struck in proof format, including the Standard Silver and Commercial Dollar designs, but the regular-issue silver dollar dies of 1871 were taken for striking off-metal pattern issues in aluminum, copper, and nickel. One pattern dated 1871 with the regular Seated Liberty obverse die even uses the No Motto reverse of 1840-65, a complete anachronism. Collectors thus interested in the 1871 silver dollars have a wide range of possible designs and patterns, due to the free-wheeling Mint policies (or lack thereof) of the day.

This Superb Gem proof (With Motto) dollar boasts incredible eye appeal, as the grade implies. Much cameo contrast is present, and the fields are reflective throughout despite light toning that ranges from gold-gray to blue. The strike is full throughout both sides. A couple of small contact marks in the reverse field are not overt and fail to detract from the overall top-notch aesthetic appeal. Census: 3 in 67, 0 finer (2/13).
