1871 Seated Dollar, PR67 Ultra Cameo
Extraordinary Cameo Contrast
None Certified in Higher Numeric Grades

1871 $1 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Among With Motto Seated Liberty dollars, the 1871 claims the second-highest proof mintage of the series, at a generous 960 pieces. The coins were primarily sold with the proof sets, which enjoyed a steady demand throughout the year. It is not likely that any significant number went unsold, as the final delivery of 110 coins took place in November, indicating that supplies had run low before the popular Christmas season. The 1871 has a typical survival rate for proofs of that era, as NGC and PCGS have combined to certify a total of 454 coins between them (1/13), or just a little less than 50 percent of the original mintage.

At least two obverse dies and probably two reverse dies were prepared for the proof coinage in 1871. This coin represents the more available Breen-5488 variety, with the final digits in the date clearly separated and some minor doubling on the feathers of the left wing (not to be confused with the Doubled Reverse Die variety listed by Q. David Bowers in his series reference). According to the description of lot 921 in the Chapman brothers' sale of May 27, 1889, some of the 1871 proofs were made from silver obtained by melting down silver trumpets deposited by Philadelphia's Diligent Fire Engine Company 10.

The present coin exhibits profound cameo contrast between the deeply mirrored fields and the richly frosted devices. The black-on-white cameo flash is stunning when this coin is tilted in the light. The design elements are sharply detailed and the pristine surfaces show no signs of toning or contact. Eye appeal is truly remarkable.
