Seated dollar comprise a minority of the population, and any
example grading finer than PR64 Cameo is a notable rarity. The
Simpson coin is distinguished as the sole finest 1872 proof at PCGS
(none of the few Deep Cameos reported at that service grade finer
than PR65+), and it is tied with just two other Superb Gem Cameos
for finest known when the NGC Census is considered
(11/21).The 1872 dollar was issued as part of silver proof sets that year, of which 950 were produced throughout the course of the year. Walter Breen, in his proof Encyclopedia, suggests that some unsold coins may have been melted in July 1873, although the availability of this issue seems to be unaffected compared to other With Motto proof issues. Examples are generally available, although most coins lack a high degree of quality and eye appeal.
The Simpson coin displays incredible blue, violet, and golden border toning around warm champagne interiors, complementing profound field-device contrast on each side. The deeply mirrored fields glimmer around frosted motifs, adding to the immense visual appeal. To our knowledge, no Cameo proof 1872 Seated dollar has ever been offered at auction in this grade.
