Description

1873 Seated Dollar, PR66 Ultra Cameo
Extraordinary Appeal

1873 $1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. Ex: Sweet Collection. The doubled motto (specifically IN GOD WE) is indicative of a doubled die variety that has been observed on proof Seated dollars of 1872 and 1873, along with some patterns using the regular reverse design. It is possible that the motto was entered into the die in a separate step using a complete punch that only contains that element, although such a procedure seems rather pointless even at that time, as the motto seems to remain in a constant position on all different reverse dies of this design type.

The motto was either a separate punch used on every die from 1866 to 1873, or it was part of the hub that was used to manufacture individual dies. Each known reverse die has two common characteristics: the G in GOD is punched over a stray letter, possibly an E. The W in WE has an extra serif below the upper left serif.

This is a remarkable example with amazing contrast, the devices being highly lustrous and the fields deeply mirrored. It has a sensational black and white appearance. NGC has certified two examples in PR66 Ultra Cameo and one in PR68 Ultra Cameo, while PCGS has certified just one each in PR66 Deep Cameo and PR67 Deep Cameo (2/14).
