Description

Elusive Proof 1837 No Stars Half Dime

1837 No Stars PR 64 NGC. Ex: Dawson. A choice, needle sharp example of this elusive proof striking, its status as a presentation piece assured by the boldly repunched digits in the dates. Even further evidence is provided by the fields, which have a special reflective quality and by the mirrored polish in the recesses of the devices. The obverse shows light, irregular toning while the reverse is layered in milky, concentric hues of steel-blue and lilac that tend to mask the underlying mirror finish. It has been reliably estimated that 20 proofs were struck of the new Seated Liberty design, at least half of which survive today. Population: 1 in 64, none finer (7/98).
