Description

1838 No Drapery Half Dime, PR63
Only Three Known Proofs

1838 H10C No Drapery PR63 NGC. There are only three known examples of the extremely rare 1838 proof half dime, as recorded below, although past estimates have suggested as many as five or six are known. This Select proof has lovely golden-violet toning over both sides, with the expected bold design motifs and fully mirrored fields. Slight weakness of the leaves below the first S in STATES is noted on this piece, and similar weakness appears on the finest known Eliasberg-Kaufman specimen. Faint hairlines and contact marks are present on this example, preventing a higher numerical grade. Our updated roster includes three distinct specimens, with two additional auction appearances.

1. PR66 ★ NGC. The Philip Kaufman specimen. Matthew A. Stickney (Henry Chapman, 6/1907); John M. Clapp; Clapp Estate (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Estate (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 943; Philip Kaufman (Heritage, 1/2008), lot 3016; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), lot 5181.
2. PR65. David Bullowa (5/1952), lot 1032; John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 455.
3. PR63 NGC. The present specimen with no prior provenance known, although see our comments at B, below.
