Description

1852 Half Dime, Richly Toned PR65
One of Perhaps 10 Proofs Minted

1852 H10C PR65 PCGS. CAC. This carefully preserved, richly toned Gem comes from an estimated mintage of a mere 10 proofs. The coins were struck several years prior to Mint Director Snowden's push to popularize proof coinage and make them more widely available to collectors. In 1852, proofs were still produced on an "as-needed" basis, whenever requested by a collector.

Dense, obviously original sea-green and copper-red toning dominates both sides, but iridescent accents of gold and purple-rose are also noteworthy. The design details are razor-sharp, and bright reflectivity becomes evident beneath the deep patina when the piece is rotated under a lamp. A few wispy die striations occur on the obverse and reverse alike (creating the brightness in the fields), but the pleasing surfaces are free from bothersome contact marks. The proof 1852 half dime is a rare coin in any grade. This piece is among the finest known in addition to being the only Gem proof certified by PCGS. NGC has graded two coins at PR65, with one finer. PCGS has also encapsulated a single proof specimen as PR66 (10/15).
