Description
1852 Half Dime, PR65
Only a Handful of Proofs Believed Known Today
1852 H10C PR65 PCGS. CAC. This carefully preserved, richly
toned Gem proof comes from an estimated proof mintage of a mere 10
pieces. There have only been 10 auction appearances of the proof
1852 half dime since 1997, representing at most eight coins. These
proofs were struck several years prior to Mint Director Snowden's
push to popularize proof coinage and make them more widely
available to collectors. In 1852, proofs were still produced on an
"as needed" basis, whenever requested by a collector. Records in
this pre-1858 era were not carefully kept, and today we are
essentially left with speculation of original mintage figures that
are extrapolated from the number of surviving specimens.
Undoubtedly, proofs from each of these early years were dropped
into circulation by unknowing descendents of collectors, further
confusing the number originally struck.Dense, obviously original sea-green and copper-red toning dominates on both sides, but iridescent accents of gold and purple-rose are also noteworthy. The design details are razor-sharp, and bright reflectivity becomes evident beneath the deep patina when the piece is rotated beneath a lamp. A few wispy die striations are noted on the obverse and reverse alike (creating the brightness in the fields), but the pleasing surfaces are free of bothersome contact marks. The proof 1852 is obviously a rare coin, and this is among the finest known as well as being the only Gem proof certified by PCGS. NGC has graded two coins at PR65, with none finer. PCGS has also encapsulated a single proof specimen at PR66 (11/13).
