1856 PR66 Half Dime
1856 H10C PR66 NGC. Ex: Pittman. The 1856 proof half dime is
a rare issue from an unrecorded but undoubtedly small mintage.
David Akers estimates only 30-35 examples are extant today in all
grades, and the date is very rare at the Premium Gem level. This is
only the third time Heritage has been privileged to handle an 1856
half dime in PR66. The spectacular Premium Gem offered in lot 1793
of the Milwaukee ANA Auction (Heritage, 8/2007) realized
Rare Early Proof, Ex: Pittman
The present coin claims an illustrious pedigree to the famous John Jay Pittman Collection. Pittman was widely known for the high quality of his coins, and this example more than lives up to his standards. Delicate champagne toning on the obverse and light heather toning on the reverse fail to subdue the brilliant mirrored finish and distinct cameo contrast of this Premium Gem. The obverse has reddish splashes that provide additional character. Both sides feature a strong strike that only shows weakness along the obverse border, with a few tiny planchet flakes on otherwise pristine surfaces. Census: 5 in 66, 0 finer (6/12).
