Description

1857 Half Dime, Toned PR66
Likely Fewer Than 50 Proofs Known

1857 H10C PR66 PCGS. Proof 1857 half dimes are rare, from an unrecorded but small mintage. PCGS estimates that 50-75 pieces are known in all grades, although in reality the availability may be closer to half of that. There are only 35 or 36 documented proof half dollars of 1857, and the proof half dime has a similar auction appearance rate. This is a splendid Premium Gem that exhibits light gold, blue, and iridescent toning on both sides that partially subdues the mirrored fields and lustrous devices. Slight field-to-device contrast is evident, although the toning prevents a Cameo designation. Population: 4 in 66, 1 finer (3/18).(Registry values: P1)
