Description

1859 Half Dime, PR66 Ultra Cameo
Hollow Stars Subtype

1859 H10C PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. There are only two reasonably collectible proof half dimes from the 1850s, and this date is sometimes considered a separate type issue. Thus the two collectible dates of the decade, 1858 and 1859, are each separate design types. The 1859 half dimes have hollow centers to each star, a slimmed down Liberty especially noted in her arm, and other very minor design modifications. This modified Liberty Seated design was engraved by Anthony C. Paquet, an assistant to James Longacre in the engraving department. Less than 800 Proofs were produced, and they are only infrequently encountered in Gem Quality. This impressive Premium Gem is deeply mirrored with frosty silver luster on the devices, creating sensational contrast on each side. A few tiny lint marks are evident on the obverse. Census: 1 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 1 finer (1/12).(Registry values: P4)
