Description
1866 Half Dime, PR67
Elusive Issue in Both Formats
1866 H10C PR67 PCGS. This Superb Gem proof is nearly perfect
from a technical standpoint with deeply reflective fields. The
obverse features smoky gray-rose toning, while the reverse is
brilliant with a hint of light color over the wreath. Exceptional
quality and extremely rare in such a superior state.Population Data (3/15): This is one of two PR67 coins tied for finest at PCGS (there is also one PR67 Deep Cameo). Among non-Cameo coins, NGC shows a single PR67 representative with one PR68 finer.
Heritage Commentary: The 1866 half dime is a scarce issue whether it is in proof or business strike format. Only 10,000 circulation strikes were produced along with 725 proofs, making the proofs always in demand among collectors who seek a high-grade example but cannot locate or lack the resources to obtain a Mint State representative.
Provenance: ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2001), lot 5657; purchased from Joseph O'Connor (10/2003).(Registry values: P2)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2363, PCGS# 4449, Greysheet# 3930)
Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
Weight: 1.24 grams
