Description

1844 Seated Half Dollar, PR62
Extremely Rare in Proof Format

1844 50C PR62 NGC. Since the advent of third-party certification more than four decades ago, collectors have grown accustomed to population totals increasing over time. The 1844 proof half dollar, however, remains virtually unchanged. The Eugene H. Gardner Collection contained two certified 1844 proof half dollars. One was the Pittman-Kaufman coin that crossed over from its PR66 Cameo NGC holder to a PR65 PCGS slab and later to a PR65 Cameo PCGS holder, leaving this PR62 example as the only 1844 proof half dollar at NGC. PCGS reports two PR62 examples but we can trace only one of those. Nevertheless, the absolute rarity of this issue is sure to generate excitement come auction day. The present MS62 coin displays razor-sharp devices that stand out against the reflective mirrors, with the mirrorlike intensity especially prominent when the coin is held at an angle under a lamp. Broad, square rims frame colorful surfaces that reveal iridescent peach-orange, lavender, olive, and blue patina. The rich toning enhances the aesthetic appeal and conveniently hides the few tiny, scattered contact marks that perhaps limit the grade. This coin is likely the second-finest of what ranks among the rarest of all Seated half dollar proofs, seldom offered, and of great importance to early proof specialists. NGC Census: 1 in 62, 0 finer (7/25).
