Description

1847 Seated Half, Toned PR64
Deeply Mirrored Fields, Rare Proof Date

1847 50C PR64 NGC. True proof examples of earlier coins are usually identified as such by a mere glance, and this is just such a coin. The fields are deeply mirrored around lustrous and sharply defined devices. Both sides have a blend of pleasing ivory, gold, and lilac color. A few faint hairlines on each side prevent a Gem grade determination for this splendid piece.
While we do not have an accurate Census of proof 1847 half dollars, we suspect that the population is less than 10 coins in all grades. NGC and PCGS have combined to grade 16 submissions in all grades, with the finest certified as PR66. Census: 4 in 64, 1 finer (11/12).
Ex: Charlotte National Money Show (Heritage, 3/2007), lot 827, where it realized $29,900.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
