Description
1849 Seated Half, PR65
Rare Gem Proof, Ex: Richmond Collection
1849 50C PR65 NGC. Today, numismatic researchers are in
agreement that no more than six or seven 1849 proof half dollars
exist. The few untraced early appearances most likely belong to
coins represented within the numbered roster, although the lack of
useable images prevent linking those appearances to the exact
coins. This former Richmond Collection example is well documented
and ranks fourth on the list. Deep cobalt-blue and violet hues
dominate the rims on each side, moving inward to lighter hues of
pink and orange, a totally original piece. Some untoned silver
elements remain in the center, and the two areas of silver color
near the date provide positive identification as the Richmond
Collection example. The surfaces appear fully struck and
essentially unmarked throughout, an incredibly pleasing example of
this rare early proof issue. The last appearance of an 1849 proof
half dollar in a Heritage Auction was nearly seven years ago.1849 Proof Half Dollar Roster
