Description

Rare and Attractive 1856 Half Dollar, Gem Proof

1856 50C PR65 NGC. Although the exact number of survivors is unknown, no more than 25 proof 1856 half dollars are considered to exist. Wiley and Bugert (1993) speculated that "less than 25 are known," while Breen estimated 14 specimens extant in 1977 and then raised that figure to 20 or 25 examples in 1988. Regardless of the precise number, this impressive coin is certainly one of the finest known representatives of this rare issue.
Pleasing amber and violet toning encircles the perimeter, which contrasts nicely against the silver-gray centers. Both sides exhibit deeply mirrored fields and there is moderate cameo contrast on the reverse. Several minuscule contact marks are visible under magnification, but they are nearly imperceptible to the unaided eye. PCGS has certified just two example in PR65 (one is Cameo) with none finer. Census: 3 in 65, 2 finer (7/08).
