Description

Sharply Struck 1857 Seated Half, PR63
Fewer Than 25 Examples Known

1857 50C PR63 PCGS. A few minor milk spots and field hairlines account for the grade on this Select proof 1857 half dollar, one of an unknown but undoubtedly small coinage in the year before the Mint began publicly advertising proof coinage for general sale. The Breen Proof Encyclopedia comments, "Except for the small cent, probably the most difficult denomination of the year," and fewer than 25 examples are known today. This piece displays silver-gray surfaces throughout, with a sharp strike and much more appeal than the grade implies. Remember that the certified populations likely contain much duplication for these early issues. Population: 17 in 63, 13 finer (6/10).
