Description

1857 PR64 Seated Half
Early, Low-Mintage Date as a Proof

1857 50C PR64 NGC. Proof coinage minted before 1858 is always desirable and usually quite rare, with a mystique brought about in part because mintage figures are simply unavailable. As such, we are left to speculate as to the number of survivors. Wiley-Bugert suggest that 15-25 proof 1857 half dollars survive, while Breen's figure was 20-25. The advent of census figures from the major grading services suggests that these figures were too low, and, taking resubmissions into account, that there may be 50 or so distinct survivors. The current piece is a heavily mirrored coin with delightful peripheral toning, and it exactly fits Breen's characteristics for proofs of the date, including an unpolished area between the eagle's left (facing) wing and leaves. The strike is not full, with weakness noted on the eagle's leg, claw, and arrowheads, yet the overall effect is more than pleasing.
