Description

1857 Half Dollar, PR64
Lovely Golden-Brown Toning

1857 50C PR64 NGC. Sharply struck, reflective fields emanate from golden-brown, crimson, and lavender toning, creating a most attractive countenance. Proof mintages were not recorded in 1857, the last year before the Mint began its mass market proof program. Wiley and Bugert estimate that less than 25 examples survive, but population data makes PCGS's estimate of 30 to 40 a more credible number. Census: 11 in 64, 6 finer (7/25).
