Description

Richly Toned 1857 Half, PR64

1857 50C PR64 PCGS. Fewer than 25 proofs are known today of this rare issue. The Breen Proof Encyclopedia comments, "Except for the small cent, probably the most difficult denomination of the year." These pieces were, of course, made in the year before the Mint began publicly and widely marketing proof coinage for sale to the public at large. The present example boasts good luster that radiates from beneath moderately patinated amber, blue, and russet surfaces. Population: 11 in 64, 2 finer (4/09).
