1865 Half Dollar, Richly Toned PR64
    Excellent No Motto Type Coin

1865 50C PR64 PCGS. WB-101. Gunmetal-blue and rose-violet patina colors the obverse, while olive accents complement the dominant hues. The reverse features lilac-toned centers that cede to variegated purple and blue shades around the borders with a burst of orange behind the eagle's head. Light, wispy marks are noted throughout, but they are undistracting.

Variety: WB-101, with a downward-sloping date centered below the base.

Population Data (9/15): PCGS reports 50 submissions in PR64 (one in PR64+) with 21 finer examples.

Heritage Commentary: Those seeking a nicely toned, razor-sharp No Motto Seated half need look no further. From a mintage of 500 proofs, the 1865 is very scarce at the near-Gem level and rare in finer condition.

Provenance: Empire State Collection (Stack's, 1/1997), lot 578.

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 27TS, PCGS# 6419)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
