    Description

    1865 Half Dollar, PR66
    Needle-Sharp Motifs

1865 50C PR66 PCGS. Proof half dollar coinage in 1865 was limited to only 500 pieces, few of which survive in Gem or finer condition. In PR66, this issue is a major rarity, with or without field-motif contrast. This piece might have garnered a Cameo designation were it not quite so deeply toned. The obverse shows a light wheat-gold overlay of color which does allow mild contrast, although the reverse, in addition to a similar light golden hue, exhibits deeper russet-gray overtones which preclude noticeable contrast. A full strike and Gem-quality surfaces conclude the visual attributes. Population: 9 in 66 (1 in 66+), 1 finer (5/15).

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 27TS, PCGS# 6419)

    Weight: 12.44 grams

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
