    1874 Arrows Half Dollar, PR67
Tied for Finest Graded of the Type

1874 50C Arrows PR67 PCGS. CAC. This incredible Superb Gem proof 1874 Arrows Seated half dollar is among the few finest survivors of this short-lived two-year type. The arrows at the date were added, unlike in 1853, to signify a net weight increase, from 12.44 gm of .900 fine silver to 12.5 gm, an "even number" in metric terms at a time when there were various efforts toward a more internationally acceptable "universal" coinage. Numismatists have pointed out the laughably small increase works out to less than one-half of 1%.

The Arrows proof half dollars were produced to the extent of 550 pieces in 1873 and 700 in 1874. This piece boasts the desired needle-sharp strike visible throughout both sides, producing full details on the star centrils, the sandal, Liberty's head, and the eagle feathers on the reverse. Under a light the patina, deepest at the rims with silver-rose centers, resolves into pinkish-gray with bluish accents, a simply beautiful and problem-free coin. PCGS has never seen a numerically finer example of the type (3/13). (NGC ID# 27UV, PCGS# 6435)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
